Sgraffito (in Italian “to scratch”) is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of contrasting color (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching off the layer(s).

Chris Wise is a local Bitterroot artist. She began her art career when her daughter bought her a set of oil paints in 2002. Just a year and a half later, Chris had her first art show. Now, she teaches art therapy to local veterans and pottery classes at Clayworks In The Bitterroot. You can attend her next class on creating your own sgraffito pieces in August!
