Sgraffito by Chris Wise

 

Sgraffito (in Italian “to scratch”) is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of contrasting color (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching off the layer(s).

Chris Wise is an artist from Clayworks in the Bitterroot. She began her art career when her daughter bought her a set of oil paints in 2002. Just a year and a half later, Chris had her first art show. Now, she teaches art therapy to local veterans and pottery classes at Clayworks. You can attend her next class on creating your own sgraffito pieces in August!
